‘FISAL is basically nothing more than the assembly of my five initials’, according to Francis (Igor Serge Alain Laurent) van Velsen, attorney-at-law since 1996. He is the driving force behind FISAL IP Law, with 1 horsepower.
‘After reading law at the University of Leiden, I worked at a number of law firms. One of those was Vereenigde (nowadays: V.O.), the largest patent attorneys firm in The Netherlands. Another one was Simmons & Simmons, a British law firm with an IP department in Rotterdam.’
‘I started my own law firm in 2007. Why? Because I noticed, during my employment at the big firms, that the emphasis of the legal work shifted towards quantity instead of quality. Almost like factory work. With my own firm, I was back a the human measure, striving for quality instead of quantity. It is not rare for me to say ‘no’ to a new case. Because I only handle a few cases in parallel, I automatically have bigger focus. Odds are that if a client presents me with a query in the morning, I can come up with an in-depth response the very same day.’
